On 22nd May 1989 a public meeting was held in the Miners Welfare Club with a view to starting a lunch club in the village. Many peoples showed an interest and on 24th July the first Steering Committee met in the Village hall. After much discussion it was decided to start a lunch club two days a week in the village hall. All of the houses in Ormiston were canvassed to find out who would like to attend the lunch club. Volunteers were enlisted to help serve lunches and also to drive the mini-bus transporting members to & from the club.

At that point in time our local football team had reached the finals of the Junior Cup so it was decided to name the Lunch Club ‘The Primrose Day Centre’ in their honour

The club met every Monday & Wednesday, the management felt that although the club was a success it was impersonal in the village hall & that premises specific to the day centre would be preferred. Local councillors & MP’s were lobbied in our attempts to obtain suitable premises.

Mrs Cecilia Towe who was Chairperson at the time worked constantly on the cause and eventually the Primrose Day Centre moved into our present premises at 2 Main Street Ormiston. The council bought & renovated the property for us & provided a small grant to assist in the running of the Centre.

Cecilia Towe was the first co-ordinator of the Centre with lunches being served to members Monday through to Thursday. We shared the services of Lammermuir Transport with Tranent Day centre, Using volunteer drivers when required, mainly Tuesday & Wednesdays.

After the death of Mrs Towe in 1996 , Mrs Moira Addison took over as co-ordinator.

The Day Centre now serves lunches for members Monday till Friday & also hosts a ‘drop in’ café facility for the village.

The café is a hive of activity with visitors enjoying the chat & home baking. This is also a source of much needed funds for the centre. The centre is staffed by volunteers but still requires to fund raise to keep the centre running.

Social Functions & Fund Raising events are held regularly.

Guest speakers visit the centre & once a month our local Minister Rev Mark Malcolm holds a short service for Centre members.

On Tuesday afternoons  we have whist/dominoes

On Thursday afternoons the craft group meets to make items to sell at our Cheese & Wine evenings. Non members are very welcome to join either of these groups.

Each year our members go on at least four trips with a trip in November to allow for Christmas shopping.
