Ormiston Horticultural Society made “History in the Village” according to
the Haddingtonshire Courier of 2nd September 1949, when it reported on the
very first Ormiston Flower Show which was an unqualified success. It was
held in the Miners’ Welfare Institute Hall. There has been a show every year since l949 but for many years it has been held in the Village Hall. The Flower Show is held annually in August and is now an Open Show. The Schedules for the show can be obtained on line or from Alison Smith, Marketgate. There are classes for vegetables, cut flowers and pot plants, as well as an Industrial Section for jam, wine, baking, knitting, sewing and crafts and a Childrens’ section, including a Tallest Sunflower competition. This year children will be offered a pot with compost and seeds, to grow their own sunflowers. At the beginning of the year the committee buy in bulk bags of potting compost to sell to members at a very competitive price. Every May there is a Plant Sale mainly of bedding plants, all grown by members of the committee. The proceeds go towards running the Flower Show. Over this winter the committee has arranged a series of speakers and demonstrations for members of the Society and anyone else interested. The meetings are well attended and have covered planting in containers, apple growing, bonsai trees and floral art, recycling & composting, bulb growing & stick making. Information on either the show, plant sale, compost or future meetings can be obtained from the Secretary, Mrs. Alison Smith, Marketgate, Main Street, Ormiston, or the Treasurer, Mrs. Cathy Jess, George Street, Ormiston. |
